14. Analysis of real music video

Real music video
I have chosen to analysis two real music videos to get an idea of what makes a music video work. And also I can see how close the students music videos were to a professional video. After this I should have a good idea what me and my team need to do to succeed.

Christina Perri - A Thousand Years [Official Music Video]

This is a hybrid music video. The video starts with an establishing shot of an ocean then fads into a close up of a tea candle in a person’s hands. From the first two frames the video looks to be sad because the sea is blue and blue is assonated with sadness, then the candle could be lit for remembrance. The camera cuts to a long shot of a woman in a long dress looking out of the window. The lighting is very dark; so you can only see a dark silhouette of the woman. This is very effective as it continues with the emotion. There is camera movement which slowly zooms in top the back of the woman. Changing the camera shot from wide shot to a long shot of the woman. The camera cuts to a mid-shot of Christina Perri holding a candle, while she holds the candle she sings to the camera; her lips are in sync with what she is saying. Then the camera cuts to a establishing shot of a lake for 1 second but then fads into a close up of her face then fades again to a man sitting at a table then back to her again walking with a candle in the dark.
I've noticed there are a lot of fads in between each shot. I found that this is very repetitive and was not needed every time.
A mid shot showing the man storming out the house in anger, the camera tracks down to black as the camera fads back to Christina. Fading back to the narrative another man picks up what the other one throw onto the floor. It is an invitation to a wedding which he is not happy with. Fading into Christina putting a candle on the floor. The camera tracks her as she stands back up; the camera tracks her at a mid-shot. The tracking is effective as we get to follow her though the movements.
There is a small montage of fads between Christina and the floor of candles. This is done to create mood and movement in the song.
Then we see a small montage of the wedding stating, this is shown as a wide shot. This way we are able to see part of the setting. The location is set in a outdoor forest area. This makes it a magical place to get married and shows the love that they have for each other.
The music video continues to fad from Christina to the narrative of two loved ones getting married. As this happens the candles slowly blow out making the room darker a darker. This could be showing that the closer they we to saying 'I do' the more candles blow out.
Establishing shot of a sun set then cuts to mid tracking shot of Christina looking out onto the sunset. This is very similar to the begging where we had the silhouette of the lady in the dark. This time she is in the light showing the joy and happiness for the couple.
A montage of the couples’s honeymoon showing their love for each other. While this is going on we see snippets of Christina singing. Christina becomes more expressive in her singing compared to how she was at the begging where it was very soft and sad movements. The camera cuts back to the dark silhouette of the woman, foreshadowing the change of mood in the music video. The camera tilts down her body to the floor.
Costumes; Christina Perri wears a black lose material dress. Black is seen as something you would wear for morning or sadness stereotypically. So this makes you think that the narrative part of the song is sad, but the narrative is about two people getting married. This is very completing as weddings are seen as happiness. These two themes do not match.
Narrative wedding actors: the men are in suits blues and greys and the woman are in light coloured dresses. This shoes that it is a wedding and is happy.
On the honeymoon the woman wears mainly a soft short flowing dress and the male wears trousers and a shirt. These a quit casual upper class dress wear.
The setting of the wedding is in a forest with flowers hanging from the sky.
Noah Cyrus - Make Me (Cry) ft. Labrinth

This is a hybrid music video. The video starts with a close us shot of Noah laying close/two person shot to her partner as she looks at him. The camera cuts to a mid-shot of Labrinth sitting on the edge of the bed looking sad in a different room. In these two shot the camera doesn't say very still. The camera does track or pan, the camera slightly shakes. This could be to create the mood of the music video and what it’s going to be like. The camera is also focused on the two characters making the background blurry this is called a focus pull. This is very effective as it makes you concentrate on the focused images, which are the two characters. The costumes they are wearing in this first frame of the two of them, Noah is wearing a white cotton top. Whereas Labrinth is in burgundy baggy jumper.
When we cut back to Noah she is sitting on the edge of the bed too she rolls her head up and this is where we see her star to sing. She is in a mid-shot here too. The two characters start to mirror each other in the two different rooms and situations they are in.
When the shots are made they are at opposite angles to one another, possibly suggesting they are looking to each other in their thoughts. In both locations they are very similar. The bed room has a brick wall, other half laying bed, couch and a window. Mirroring the rooms but with different style furniture could be showing that these situations can happen to anyone.
The lighting in the room is very bright and ambient. This gives the video a soft light fairy feels to the video. Though what they are talking about is quit sad as they are singing about relationships and how they feel about there’s.
In this music video there is a lot of meaning and messages about relationships and that everyone gets the same feelings if they are woman, man, black or white. Though we are looking at two different Stories they are very much the same as they are singing in a room to their partner whom is asleep and doesn't care.
The camera tracks/cut each character as they move around the room, cutting to different shot types. There are a lot of close-ups on the face. This is to show the emotion on their faces, this way we can see how they are feeling as they sing their hearts out. The camera cuts to each character approximately every 3/4 seconds.
At 1.55 minutes the screen cuts in half us can see both rooms at the same time. I partially liked this shot as you can see both rooms. This is a wide shot of the two rooms. What I liked best about this shot was that the two videos looked like one as down the middle you can see there wall. This makes you think that there studio apartments are right next door to each other. After this the camera cuts to a close-up shot of the two of them. In this close up you can see its two videos next to each other.
At 4.01 this is down again as the two characters walk to the mirrored window.
I found this was a really nice way to finish the music video as it joins them together. They are sharing the same situations. This shows they don't know that someone just next door is going thought the same situation.
In consultation looking at a real music video contributed to my research into making my own one as I was able to analyse a professional video compared to an A-level students. This has helped me as I have a good idea how to make a good music video to go with the music. I will be doing a comparison of A-level music videos and real music videos. I will be doing this because then I can identify the difference and can pick out the best reaches to include.
