30. Target audience research

My group and I decided to conduct a questionnaire to find out what our target audience wants to see in a music video and what they expect to see. This way we would be able to tailor our music video production correctly, so people would like to watch the video. We got together to create the questionnaire choosing the questions that everyone thought were most appropriate as we wanted the questionnaire to be useful to us. We made ten questions. We used an online service as we thought that would be the best way to get lots of answers back. To get people to answer our questionnaire we posted the link on our social Medias.
We got a total of 57 responses for our results.

The first question we asked was 'What gender are you?' The reason why we asked this question was that this way we would know what percentage of the questionnaire was answered by male or female. Though knowing the gender wasn't relevant to our music video I allowed us to know what each gender was thinking. Our results showed that 7.02% were male and 92.98 were female. The majority of the people who answered our question are female. This may show an unfair balance as not also are male.

Our second question asked how old the person was. We gave them the option of 4 age brackets. When we conducted our research on pop music we found that most people that listened to pop were teens. When doing the age brackets they were mostly younger with one older which was 21+. Our results concluded together said this: We had 0% 10 and under, 3.51% 11-15, 35.09% 16-20, 61.40% were 21+. Most people that answer our questionnaire were 21+.
Question three asked 'Do you like pop music?' The reason why we asked this question was to see what percentage of people that answered our questionnaire like pop music. Pop music is the genre of our song choice that we had chosen. Luckily only 3.51% of the people of our questionnaire don't like pop music. We also gave two options for yes, which were 'yes' or 'it’s okay' as we felt that people might like pop but don't love it. Our results showed that 50.88% said yes and 45.61% said its okay. Even though we gave another option the majority still said yes they like pop music. Putting the two together have a total of 55 people liked pop. Most people who answered our questionnaire like pop music.
Question four asked 'How often do you watch music'. We wanted to know what percentage do watch music videos and how often if they do. This contributes to our research as that way we know how many people do watch them and if the people answering the questionnaire are viewers. We gave four options and the results were 12.28% never, 59.65% from time to time, 22.81% often, all of the time was 5.26%. The majority vote was from time to time. This was understand able as most people have watched but they don't watch the repeatedly.
Question five asked 'What appeals to you when watching a music video. We wanted to make sure we included these aspects as this is want makes people watch the music videos in the first place. We got a wide range of answers. The main ones that were said a lot were a storyline, change of location and are engaging. After hearing these responses we wanted to make sure we included these three features as these are what people like to see, and it what makes them go watch the videos. I found this question very helpful as it helped me realise what was imported and what would make my group’s video outstanding.
Question Six asked 'what would you expect to see in a pop video?’ This question was made to see if there is anything particular that people like to see when watching a pop music video compared to any other genera. Again we collected a lot of results this time I put the most popular into a table to show clearly what people like to see. As you can see 7 like outfit changes, 18 dancing, 7 the artiest, 14 narrative and 18 bright colours, different locations and shot types. There was a draw between two but we will still try to include all five of these features.
Question Seven asked 'what is your favourite music video and why?’ The reason for this question is to see what videos our audience find good. This way I would be able to watch them and see what makes them a good video. Surprisingly some people said the song that we were doing which was nice to see. We also found a percentage of people said they don't have a favourite music video.
Question eight asked 'Do you think a music video with a narrative should have a happy ending?' at this point in time we didn't know how to end our music video so we wanted to see if people preferred a happy or sad ending. We gave them four answers to choose from. My results were 3.51% yes, 5.26% no, 15.79% I don't mind, depends on the song were 75.44%. Most people said it all depends on the song. So this left us to decide for our self's.  This was helpful as it helped us realise we had to look into the song and our storyline to choose what would be best.
Question nine asked 'Do you prefer narrative, performance or both? This question was put in place to make sure we choose to right route to go down for our music video. Our results showed narrative 28.07%, performance 8.77% and both 63.16%. Most people said both (hybrid) as you’re able to watch your artist but also watch storyline. As we found this out we made sure we put lip syncing into the video showing the artiest perform not just act.

Our last question asked 'What is your take on Symphony by Clean Bandit ft. Zara Larsson?' This question we were very intrigued to know about. This is because when we watch the real video for the first time all three of us had different takes on the video and saw it for different prospective. A lot of people commuted saying it is a good music video. Some people saw it as a couple, brothers or friends. And again some understood the video and others didn't. This was very interesting to read. This helped us with our music video as we wanted to show a story but can also be seen in different ways.
In conclusions after making a survey and analysing our results has been beneficial to me and my group as it has given an idea what people like to see in a music video and what they think makes a good music video. Now we can go back and makes changes and add what we have found out from this questionnaire. However, I don't think we had the biggest range of different people as most were female aged 21+.
